The West Gonja District is one of the 254 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana, and forms part of the 28 MMDAs in the Northern Region. With its administrative capital at Damango, it was established in 2004 by a new legislative instrument (L.I.1775).
West Gonja District is located to the west of Tamale, the Northern Regional capital of Ghana and it lays within longitude 10 5 1 and 20 581 west and latitude 80 321 and 100 2 1 North. The District has a total land area of 4715.9sqkm and about 30% of the district’s land represents forest reserves and Mole National Park.
It also shares boundaries to the south with Central Gonja District, Bole and Sawla-Tuna-Kalba Districts to the west, Wa East District to the north-west and North Gonja District to the east.
The population of the District according to 2010 population and housing census stands at 41,180 with 20,681 males and 20,499 females.
