Kassena-Nankana West District with its Administrative capital Paga forms part of the new districts and municipalities created by the President, J.A Kufuor were inaugurated at their various locations simultaneously on the 29th of February 2008.
The President by an Executive Instrument (E.I) created 27 new Districts, 4 Municipalities, Upgraded 26 existing Districts and 2 existing Municipalities.
The district now forms part of the thirteen (13) municipalities and districts in the upper east Region of Ghana.
The District shares boundaries with Burkina Faso to the North, Builsa District to the South, Sissala East District in the Upper West Region to the West, and Kassena-Nankana East Municipal to the East.
The population of the municipality according to 2010 population and housing census stands at 70,667 with 34,747 males and 35,920 females.
