The response from the various institutions which donated various sums of money in a form of cheques and other fishing gears including outboard motors, generators, fishing cork, among others follows the Ministry’s appeal for such supports to make the day successful and to provide befitting awards to deserving fishermen and women.

The Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Francis Kingsley Ato Codjoe who received the cheques and items on behalf of the Ministry was grateful to the companies for their support.

He described some of the sponsors as annual supporters of the Ministry on such occasions as the National Farmers’ Day celebration having been major sponsors since 2013 when the Fisheries Ministry was created.

He said the contributions of the fishing industry to the national economy and particularly to the protein needs of Ghanaians cannot be overemphasized that it is just prudent to pat the fishermen at the back for their great work despite the dangers they are exposed to; and this is why the Fisheries Ministry highly acknowledged the contributions of the corporate institutions towards the day.

This year’s National Farmers’ Day celebration which is on the theme: “Farming for Food and Jobs”, will be a week-long one with a lot of activities including exhibitions, and the Deputy Minister called on corporate bodies particularly the sponsors to secure stands to exhibit their products.

According to him, the decision to modify the celebration and make it a week-long programme attests to the importance the current government attached to agriculture and government’s quest for economic transformation through increased agriculture production and modernization.

This explains the various interventions by government in the sector, and announced that the Fisheries Ministry has outlined a number of programmes for the sector come next year to enhance production through aquaculture development, and to maintain the gains made in the fight against illegal fishing.
