AMA presents food items to chiefs towards Ga Homowo

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), in the spirit of giving, has presented food and other items to the Ga Traditional Council towards the celebration of this year’s Homowo festival.

The gesture is an annual event in the calendar of the AMA, and the seven quarters of the Ga State paramountcies comprising Abola, Gbese, Sempe, Otublohum, Ngleshie Alata, Asere and Akumadjen, in the Odododiodoo Constituency in the Greater Accra Region.

The items included 89 cartons each of minerals, malt, and Guinness, 107 bags of maize, 107 gallons of oil, 23 cartons each of castle bridge and schnapps, 128 crates of beer and undisclosed sums of money to the chiefs.

Mrs. Elizabeth Kwatsoe Sackey, the Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive on behalf of the AMA called for unity among the people to ensure a peaceful celebration before, during and after the festivities.

She said Homowo offers a platform to deepen good relationships between families, elders and the communities under the paramount cities and their environs.

Mrs. Sackey indicated security measures have been put in place to ensure peaceful celebration of the festival.

She said that this year’s festivities would be different as it was not going to be like the usual observance such as the sprinkling of the traditional food due to the death of the Ga Manye (Queenmother), Naa Deidei Omaedru III.

She said the rites associated with the festival would be repressed as the sprinkling of ‘Kpokpoi,’ the traditional food, would be performed only within the confines of the stool homes by the chiefs.

“There would also be a strict enforcement of the rites as directed by the chiefs in consonance with the tradition of the Ga-Dangme people,” she noted.

Nii Adote Otintor II, Sempe Mantse, and Mankrolo of the Ga State, who received the items on behalf of the chiefs and people, expressed gratitude to the AMA and the government.

He gave assurance that this year’s Homowo would be celebrated in peace devoid of violence.
