On Thursday March 23, 2023, the Assembly had yet another engagement with the stakeholders including squatters on the Texpo Market Land to brief them on the need to relocate to pave way for actual construction to commence.

The MCE in addressing the meeting explained that though the Assembly has the power to just forcefully drive the people out of the land since the land belongs to government, they just deem it prudent to deliberate with them (squatters) for a smooth process since they are not oblivious of the socio-economic impact the ejection would have on their lives and livelihoods.

The MCE, however, affirmed that the benefits of the hospital to be built on the land is for all residents in the municipality and beyond and cannot be sacrificed for just few hundred individuals who will equally benefit from the hospital.

Having briefed the squatters on the exact areas covered by the 9 acres of land allotted for the project, the MCE announced a month grace period - that is April ending for those occupying that portion of the land to vacate or be forced out.

A representative from the Office of the president on the Agenda 111 program informed the meeting that the start of the project had actually delayed due to land issues, and may be given to a different assembly if the delay continuous.

He thus appealed to the squatters to see reason with the assembly for the larger good of the municipality.

CONCERNS
Kwesi Poku Bosompem, Tema West Constituency Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party who lauded the planned construction of the hospital was equally delighted that the Assembly has decided to engage stakeholders before the project begins.

He however appealed to authorities to ensure that the contractor engages the services of the locals to boost employment opportunities in the area.

Some squatters also appealed to authorities to help them secure the National Rental Assistance Scheme (NRAS) to enable them secure accommodation for themselves and their families.
