Following the national street naming and operational guidelines on property addressing policy launched in April 2012 by his Excellency John Dramani Mahama, a committee has been set and inaugurated by the Tain District Assembly (TDA) to plan and conduct activities to address the issue of orderly human settlement and development in the district.

The Team is made up of the Information Services Department, the Town and Country Planning Department, the Budget Office, Land Valuation Division of the Lands Commission, District Planning Coordinating Unit, Building inspectorate unit, the finance unit of the Tain District Assembly among others.

Speaking at the inauguration, the District Chief Executive (DCE) Mr Jones Tawiah Samuel said the launch was to give effect to the presidential directive that all street naming and house numbering should be completed in eighteen (18) months.

He said the Area Councils are mandated by L.I 1589 to among other things make recommendations to the District Assembly on the naming of all roads in their areas of authority and ensure the numbering of all buildings.

Mr Tawiah emphasised that naming of streets among other advantages help improve service delivery and the management of public affairs. It also helps to improve the response of emergency services, increase revenue collection and facilitate business operation.

He reiterated that, the new committee was to undertake initial assessment of available resources for the implementation of the system, prepare a plan and budget and a schedule covering the implementation of the whole exercise, and ensure public sensitisation on the system to serve as a platform for cooperation during the implementation of the exercise.

Other tasks of the team will include working with the appropriate authorities at the sub-district levels to name the streets, recruit personnel to do fieldwork, supervise and monitor the updating of maps, supervise the work of consultants, contractors, fieldworkers and data collectors etc.

The District Chief Executive therefore charged all members of the committee to commit themselves in carrying out these noble responsibilities so as to make the district a much better place to live.

On his part, the Town and planning Department officer for Tain District and Wenchi Municipality, Mr Kwame Asante hinted that there would be a sophisticated mechanism at the national level to track the data system of the street naming and property addressing project.
