About 500 women and children in Zogu, a farming community in the Savelugu/Nanton District of the Northern Region, have benefited from a free medical screening and treatment exercise.

It was organised by the Tuma Kavi Development Association, in collaboration with the Christian Children’s Fund of Canada (CCFC), as part of efforts to improve the health of women and children.

The beneficiaries received treatment for ailments that included anaemia, typhoid, diarrhoea, malaria and dysentery, while the children were additionally given vitamin A and C supplements and de-wormers.

According to the senior midwife in charge of the Zogu area clinic, Madam Shcitu Alhassan, three out of every five children in the area were anaemic and she attributed it to the high rates of malaria infection, malnutrition and worm infestation among the children.

She said the area needed special medical intervention and therefore commended the CCFC, the Ghana Health Service and Tuma Kavi for collaborating to provide a clinic for the inhabitants of Zogu.

Madam Sheitu said the regular supply of drugs to the clinic by the CCFC had helped improve the health of women and children in Zogu and its surrounding communities, including Nyoligu,     Sandu, Jegung and Tigu.

The Vice-President of the CCFC in charge of Marketing and Communication, Ms Carol Froom, who visited the country to inspect the work of the CCFC in Ghana, mentioned that the health and education of children was an integral part of national development and therefore could not be overlooked.

She stressed that access to health and education was a basic right of each child, adding that this was the reason why the CCFC focused much of its interventions on improving children’s nutrition, disease resistance, education, access to water and sanitation.
