Asante Akim S: Minister assures universal access to internet by 2020
Minister of Communications, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has stated that, the NPP-Government is still working assiduously to ensure universal access to telephone services and internet connectivity across the country by the year 2020.

She said, Science, technology and innovation have become key factors contributing to economic growth in both advanced and developing economies; hence, it was essential for the government to roll-out these projects to improve ICT especially, in rural communities.

The Minister made this known, during her visit to some communities in the Asante Akyem South district of the Ashanti Region and inspected the construction of some Information Communication Technology (ICT) centres and Rural Telephony Project (RTP) by the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC).


Among the communities she visited include: Banka, Amantia, Gyadam, Obogu, Policekrom and Banso.

Speaking at a short but colourful event, Mrs Owusu-Ekuful reiterated that, the Akufo-Addo government will not relent on its decision to expand ICT in the country since; the sector plays an important role, particularly by contributing to fast technological progress and productivity growth.


According to her, the Rural Telephony Project (RTP) is expected to extend the coverage of telephone services and internet connection to rural areas as part of efforts to achieve development for all.

On his part, District Chief Executive (DCE) of the area, Mr Alexander Frimpong, also expressed his profound appreciation to the Minister for her enormous contribution towards the upliftment of ICT services and training in the district.
