President launches National Sanitation campaign
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo has called on all citizens to get themselves involved in government's effort to create a cleaner environment as he launches the National Sanitation campaign in Accra.

He charged Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to as a matter of urgency set up monitoring and evaluation departments to ensure that the clean Ghana agenda is achieved.

According to the President, as waste is generated every day, citizens have an equal obligation to keep the environment clean emphasizing that must be done on daily basis but not monthly, “EVERY DAY IS SANITATION DAY” he said.

He noted that government cannot do it alone and has therefore called on all of Ghanaians especially chiefs and queen mothers, religious and opinion leaders, civil society organisations, private sector operators, to rise up to the challenge and help make a difference this time around.
The President performed the National Sanitation Campaign launch at the Banquet Hall of the State House.

President Akufo-Addo further given a two week directive that every government department and agency, including the Seat of Government assigns two officers as Sanitation Marshal and Deputy Marshal, to oversee compliance to laid down sanitation by-laws.

“The heads of departments have one week within which to identify and assign these officers.
The Environmental Health and Sanitation Directorate must take steps to train these appointed officers on their new roles within one month of their appointment” he instructed.

A National Sanitation Brigade has also been out-doored to see to the enforcement of rules and regulations in every establishment.

The President has also hinted of plans to make Accra cleanest city in Africa starting with the Presidency, Parliament House, the Ministries, the Courts and ceremonial and arterial roads among others.

The campaign he said involves the deployment of automated sweepers in main streets, and Sanitation Brigade personnel along the streets and in major concentrations areas and pledged his personal involvement in the exercise.

“I will not be left out of this exercise. I will be directly involved, as I intend to monitor activities of the national campaign, to ensure that its goals are attained. I will review, on a quarterly basis, with the Minister for Monitoring and Evaluation, the performance of each Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assembly, and publish the results of the review,” he emphasised.
