Kwahu West Forests in Danger: Timber, Farming and Fires Eating Away Green Gold]

The rich forests of the Kwahu West Municipality are under serious threat as human activities continue to destroy one of the area’s most valuable natural assets.

Known for its dense vegetation and valuable trees such as Odum, Wawa, and Sapele, the Municipality has long depended on its forests for jobs and economic survival, especially in the timber industry.

But that “green gold” is fast disappearing.

Indiscriminate logging, expanding farms, and frequent bush burning are taking a heavy toll, reducing vast stretches of forest into dry secondary bush. Only a few pockets of virgin forest remain, and even those are under pressure.

What makes the situation more worrying is that these forests are not just trees—they are a major source of livelihood for many residents. As the forests shrink, so do job opportunities and environmental stability.

During the dry season, from November to March, the situation worsens as trees naturally shed leaves, leaving the already weakened forest more vulnerable to fires and further destruction.

Residents and environmental observers are raising red flags, warning that if urgent steps are not taken, Kwahu West could lose its forest cover completely.

The big question remains: Will action be taken now, or will Kwahu West’s forests become a thing of the past?
