The landmark project, held on Friday morning, is being described as one of the most ambitious economic interventions in the district and a fulfillment of a key campaign promise by President John Dramani Mahama.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Upper East Regional Minister, Akamugri Donatus Atanga, described the 24-hour market initiative as a groundbreaking concept that demonstrates innovative leadership and commitment to tackling youth unemployment.
According to him, the facility will serve not only as a commercial centre but also as a strategic legacy project that will stimulate round-the-clock economic activity and create opportunities for residents.
To guarantee timely execution of the project within the expected 18-month period, the Minister disclosed that portions of the District Assembly Common Fund have been ring-fenced to ensure continuous funding.
The ultra-modern market is expected to feature lockable shops, sheds, stalls, a mini-mart, warehouse facilities, a meat section, cold store, and a wholesale bulk-breaking area.
Other facilities to be included are a fire post, police post, security post, clinic, pharmacy, food court, restaurant, gym, daycare centre, and a Women’s Bank to support female entrepreneurs and traders.
The District Chief Executive for Bawku West, James Ayamwego, expressed appreciation to the President for honoring his promise, noting that the project would significantly expand economic opportunities within the district.
Also addressing the gathering, Cletus Avoka said the market would help decongest the Zebilla township and improve commercial activities in the area.
The Member of Parliament for the constituency, Ebenezer Alumire Ndebilla, urged residents to take ownership of the project and support the contractor to ensure successful completion.
Meanwhile, the project consultant, Avangarde Design Services, assured the public that quality standards would be strictly maintained throughout the construction process.
The project is expected to become a major economic hub in the Upper East Region, strengthening local commerce and improving living standards in Bawku West.
