Sunyani West Assembly Members Undergo Leadership Training to Boost Local Governance

A two-day certificate training workshop on Next Generation Local Governance Leadership has been held for Assembly Members in the Sunyani West Municipality.

Organized by the Institute of Local Government Studies at the Municipal Assembly Hall, the programme is designed to equip members with the skills needed to identify, analyze, and propose innovative solutions to pressing district challenges.

 

Beyond technical competencies, the training also aims to shift mindsets, strengthen deliberative and oversight roles, and empower a new network of emerging leaders to serve as role models within their communities.

 

Key areas covered during the curriculum included:

 

  •  Decentralization and local governance laws
  •  Corporate governance and oversight responsibilities
  •  Representative and deliberative functions
  •  By-law formulation and enforcement
  •  Executive mandates and discretionary powers of Assemblies
  •  Leadership and community mobilization

 

Participants were encouraged to thoroughly study the Local Governance Act, Model Standing Orders, and other relevant legislative instruments to contribute meaningfully to deliberations and decision-making processes within the Assembly.

 

MCE Addresses Participants

Addressing the members, the Municipal Chief Executive, Kwasi Asante-Boateng (Esq.), underscored the necessity of the training, stating it would ensure members are well-prepared to respond to emerging governance issues.

 

He expressed optimism that the knowledge acquired would enhance the performance of Assembly Members and significantly accelerate the developmental needs of the municipality.
