The inspection revealed the growing practice of using drains as office and business spaces, a situation that has obstructed the free flow of water and increased the risk of flooding within the market.

In response, the Assembly undertook a demolition exercise to remove illegal structures erected on drainage channels, with the aim of restoring the drains and improving sanitation in the area.

The Mayor noted that encroachment on drains poses a serious threat to public safety and undermines efforts to maintain a clean and healthy environment. He urged traders and residents to comply with planning and sanitation regulations by avoiding the construction of structures on drainage systems.

The Tema Metropolitan Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing environmental and planning laws as part of ongoing efforts to improve sanitation, prevent flooding, and ensure a safer trading environment for all.
