The maintenance exercise follows concerns over the deteriorating condition of the flood gate infrastructure. According to the Assembly, the metal handles of the gates have become severely corroded after being exposed to salt water for more than two decades. The corrosion has weakened the handles, making them incapable of supporting the weight of the gates and necessitating urgent repairs.

Municipal Chief Executive for Keta, Wisdom Seade, said the Assembly is working to complete the maintenance works as quickly as possible to preserve the flood management system and ensure the safe and efficient operation of the gates.

He further disclosed that the Assembly is considering replacing the existing concrete gate slabs with plastic or fibreglass alternatives. The proposed change is expected to reduce the overall weight of the gates, lessen the strain on the supporting columns, and provide a more durable and environmentally compatible solution for the flood control infrastructure.

The Assembly believes the rehabilitation and planned upgrades will improve the long-term functionality of the flood gates and enhance the municipality's capacity to manage flooding, particularly during the rainy season.
