Severe floods hit several communities in Adansi South district

Adansi South DCE Hon. Francis Ankomah, New Edubiase MP Hon. George Oduro and the Ashanti Regional NADMO Coordinator Mr. Kwabena Senkyire have inspected areas hit by severe floods in New Adansi South District.

Torrential rains has hit Adansi South District for the past one month leading to severe floods in all the communities lying within the flood plains of river Pra and river Offin in the district.

Several farmlands have been taking over by the bloods leading to the destruction of food crops worth thousands of Ghana cedis in the district. Many people have also lost their homes because their houses have been taken over by the floods hence they are perching with friends and relatives. Roads leading to some of the communities have been blocked by the floods as a result the people find it difficult to travel to buy food and other essential things. Some of the people manage to use canoes to move from the flooded communities before they are able to get food and others things to buy.

The DCE Hon. Francis Kwabena Ankomah, the MP of New Edubiase Constituency Hon. George Oduro and the Regional NADMO Coordinator Mr. Kwabena Senkyire toured some of the affected communities to know the extent of damage the floods have caused. When the people saw the DCE, MP and the NADMO coordinator they all converged at a place to listen to them.

Speaking on behalf of the people at Acheasewa Mr. Ahamed Issah expressed the ordeal they are going through because of the floods. He said that their farmlands have been taken over by the floods, some of the houses have collapsed and the road has also been blocked by the floods . “We are in a state if distress, we need help immediately to remove us from this hardships; we have no place to sleep and no food to eat. We are appealing to the district assembly and the government to come to our aid immediately else we shall die of hunger, the spokesperson said”. He also called on the government to construct a bridge at all the places where the floods have covered on the road avoid future occurrence.

The Regional NADMO Coordinator Mr. Kwabena Senkyire sympathized with the people and promised them that the government will do everything to ameliorate them from their woes in a short time and called on the people to be patient. “I could see the frustration you are going through, I will do everything within my capacity as the regional NADMO coordinator to at least
relief you from this situation.

The Member of Parliament associated himself with the situation and urged the people to be calm. ‘I will liaise with the national NADMO Director so that the necessary reliefs are brought to you in a short time.



The District Chief Executive Hon. Francis Ankomah thanked God that no human life was lost. “I will team up with the NADMO Officials and the Member of Parliament to see to it that the necessary things are done to bring relief to you” he concluded.

At Adansi Praso the disaster is so severe that some houses have collapsed, hectares of rice farms have been destroyed, a fuel station has been taken over by the floods, a rice mill and vehicles have also been submerged by the floods.




Madam Matilda Brewu a rice farmer whose farm has been destroyed by the floods said that most of the farmers took part in the government’s planting for food and jobs; we secured loans in the form of fertilizer and other farm inputs but now we do not know how we are going to repay the loans; we are pleading with the government to come to our aid by giving us another inputs so that when the floods subsides we can replant the rice the farmer concluded during the minor season.

The Regional NADMO Coordinator expressed his dissatisfaction over the building of houses and other structures at water ways which is the major reason for the seasonal floods in most part in the country. He called on all District Assemblies to prevent people from building in lowland areas to prevent this seasonal disaster which cost the state millions of Ghana Cedis.

The floods have also destroyed the roads that lead to these communities and need immediate attention. Due to the swampy nature of the land in the district there is the need for more steel bridges and culverts to be construct over the streams and valleys on the roads in the district to prevent the people from being cut off during heavy rains.




The Member of Parliament and the District Chief Executive with the other officials visited the homes of the affected people to wish them well and promised that they will do everything to bring them relief items to reduce their woes.

Hon. Francis Ankomah pleaded with the government to treat the disaster situation in Adansi South as very urgent and come out with the necessary relief items to remove the people from the unpleasant situation they find themselves in.

Some of the affected communities are Acheasewa, Adansi Praso, Yaw Owusukrom, Edwenase, Brim Aboi, Hwediem to mention but a few.
