Ningo-Prampram DCE Cracks Down on Illegal Encroachment Around Dawhenya Irrigation Dam

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Ningo-Prampram, Hon. Raphael Uriel Nartey, has led a joint inspection of the Dawhenya Irrigation Dam to warn against illegal encroachment and excavation activities threatening the protected area surrounding the facility.

The exercise brought together the Chief of the Dawhenya Area, officials of the Ghana Irrigation Development Authority (GIDA), and personnel of the Ghana Police Service, led by the District Police Commander.

During the inspection, the team cautioned individuals engaged in unauthorized digging and development on lands surrounding the irrigation dam, stressing that such activities pose a serious threat to an important public asset that supports agriculture and the livelihoods of many residents in the Ningo-Prampram District.

Hon. Nartey emphasized that the lands surrounding the Dawhenya Irrigation Dam form part of a legally protected green belt and reserve area. He noted that no person is permitted to undertake construction, excavation, or any form of development within a 100-metre radius of the dam, as the buffer zone is reserved to protect the integrity and continued operation of the irrigation facility.

The DCE appealed to residents to remain vigilant and promptly report any illegal activities around the dam, describing the protection of the facility as a shared responsibility that requires the collective support of the community.

He further issued a strong warning that anyone found engaging in illegal construction, excavation, encroachment, or any unauthorized activity within the protected 100-metre reserve area would face the full force of the law, including arrest, prosecution, and other sanctions as prescribed by law.

The inspection forms part of the District Assembly's efforts to safeguard critical infrastructure, preserve agricultural resources, and ensure that the Dawhenya Irrigation Dam continues to support farming activities and livelihoods for generations to come.
