The exercise, organised jointly by the Awutu-Senya District Assembly, the Awutu Traditional Council and Zoomlion Ghana, was aimed at ridding the district capital of filth and creating a clean and healthy environment ahead of the festival.

It also formed part of the nationwide sanitation campaign following President John Dramani Mahama’s call on citizens to take responsibility for keeping their communities clean, reducing mosquito breeding and helping to prevent the spread of communicable diseases.

The exercise was led by Mr Eghan Kalala Nyamekye, District Chief Executive, and Mr Samuel Antwi-Boasiako, District Coordinating Director.

Residents and officials cleaned several parts of the township, including the local market, durbar grounds, traditional council area, schools and major roads.

They also desilted gutters, cleared choked drains and removed accumulated refuse from various parts of the township.

The exercise brought together residents, traditional authorities, Assembly officials and other stakeholders, who worked together to improve the sanitary conditions of the community.

Speaking to the media, some participants commended the organisers for the initiative and urged the District Assembly to extend similar clean-up exercises to other communities in the district.

They also called for stricter enforcement of sanitation by-laws, including the apprehension and prosecution of individuals who flouted the laws, to serve as a deterrent to others.

The participants further advocated the regular organisation of communal clean-up exercises, saying sustained community participation was necessary to complement the efforts of the Assembly in maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
