Speaking to Ghanadistricts.com during activities marking his first year in office as Municipal Chief Executive of the Ga North Municipal Assembly, Mr. Agbo said the government’s approach to decentralization would significantly improve service delivery at the local level and enable assemblies to address the immediate needs of residents more efficiently.

According to him, one of the longstanding challenges facing local assemblies has been delays in accessing funds needed to execute development projects and maintain essential services. He explained that the direct release of resources to assemblies would reduce bureaucratic bottlenecks and allow local authorities to plan and implement projects based on the priorities of their communities.

Mr. Agbo noted that the policy would accelerate development across critical sectors including education, healthcare, sanitation, road infrastructure, drainage systems and community welfare. He said the Ga North Municipality stands to benefit greatly from the initiative, particularly as the assembly continues to face increasing pressure from rapid urbanization and population growth.

He further stressed that improving local governance requires empowering assemblies not only administratively but also financially. In his view, the direct allocation of resources represents a practical demonstration of government’s commitment to decentralization and grassroots participation in national development.

The MCE added that with timely access to funds, assemblies would be better positioned to respond quickly to issues affecting residents, including poor roads, waste management challenges, flooding and inadequate educational infrastructure. He indicated that local authorities are often the first point of contact for communities and therefore need adequate support to function effectively.

Reflecting on his one year in office, Mr. Agbo highlighted a number of interventions undertaken by the assembly, including sanitation improvement exercises, road maintenance works, community engagement initiatives and efforts to strengthen public health services within the municipality.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transparency, accountability and inclusive development.
