The distribution, carried out in partnership with Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), Germany’s National Metrology Institute, formed part of activities marking the 2026 World Metrology Day celebration.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony held in Techiman on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, Dr Awal Mohammed, Deputy Director-General in charge of Operations at the GSA, said the scales were intended to support traders and encourage transparency in business transactions.
“We are here to commemorate World Metrology Day, and part of the celebration is to provide traders with scales that have been properly verified and calibrated,” he said.
He explained that accurate measuring instruments were essential in promoting confidence and fairness in commercial activities, adding that both traders and consumers stood to benefit when measurements were reliable.
The donation forms part of an ongoing collaboration between the GSA and PTB aimed at strengthening Ghana’s national metrology system and improving measurement standards across the country.
PTB has continued to support Ghana in aligning its measurement systems with internationally accepted standards to enhance trade and consumer protection.
Mr Evans Asiedu, Director of Metrology at the GSA, said the initiative went beyond the distribution of weighing scales and was aimed at deepening trust in measurement systems and promoting fair trade practices.
Beneficiary traders expressed appreciation to the GSA and its partners, noting that the weighing scales would help improve accuracy and efficiency in their businesses.
World Metrology Day is celebrated annually on May 20 to highlight the importance of measurement in science, innovation, trade, and everyday life.
This year’s celebration was held on the theme: “Metrology: Building Trust in Policy Making.”
Activities marking the celebration in Techiman included market sensitisation exercises, free verification of weighing instruments and medical devices, as well as product exhibitions.
