The district has put solid and liquid waste management at the forefront. Communal refuse containers have been distributed and strategically placed to serve predominantly low-income neighborhoods, with Zoomlion Ghana Limited serving as the registered waste contractor. A final disposal site is maintained to handle both solid and liquid waste, ensuring waste is managed in an environmentally responsible manner.

One of the challenges highlighted is the lack of toilet facilities in many new houses, which has led to increased reliance on public toilets and, in some cases, open defecation. Local officials are focusing on sensitizing landlords and promoting the installation of household sanitation facilities, with environmental health officers assisting homeowners in upgrading sanitation at the residence level.

Drainage remains a critical issue in several areas. Poorly designed drainage systems, often clogged with solid waste, contribute to water stagnation that attracts mosquitoes and heightens the risk of waterborne diseases such as diarrhoea and cholera. The district is prioritizing the expansion and maintenance of drainage networks and routine debris removal to reduce flooding and health hazards.

Public health education is a cornerstone of the plan. Environmental health officers are engaging communities to raise awareness about proper waste disposal, the importance of household toilet facilities, and the need to keep drains clear. Residents are encouraged to report clogged drains and improper waste disposal and to participate in community sanitation programs.

The overall aim is to align with national development priorities and the Ghanaian government's sustained focus on environmental sanitation as a foundation for health and human development. By improving waste management, expanding access to home sanitation, and strengthening drainage infrastructure, Central Tongu hopes to reduce disease transmission, improve living conditions, and boost the wellbeing and productivity of its residents.
