The bird of prey was found in a weakened and injured condition by 32-year-old farmer, Ebenezer Lativi, who noticed it struggling on his farmland.
Preliminary observations suggest the black kite may have been shot while attempting to prey on domestic chickens in the area, leaving it unable to fly.

Further investigations by local authorities confirmed the bird’s international origin after a metal identification ring was discovered on its leg.
The ring bears the inscription “Museum Science, 1000 Brussel,” along with the website www.ring.ac and a unique identification code, H220252.

These markings trace the bird back to the Brussels Museum of Natural Sciences, indicating it was part of an international bird migration and tracking program.

Upon receiving the report, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Assin North, Sylvester Amakye-Nyarko, directed that the injured bird be handed over to veterinary officers in the district for immediate treatment and specialized care.

The move, according to the DCE is aimed at ensuring the bird’s recovery while safeguarding its scientific value.

Officials say the incident highlights the remarkable migratory journeys undertaken by some bird species and underscores the need for greater public awareness about wildlife conservation, particularly for protected and migratory birds.
