The Ashaiman Municipal Assembly, under the leadership of the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr. Freeman Tsekpo, in collaboration with the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ashaiman, Dr. Ernest Henry Norgbey, has distributed 1,200 pieces of classroom furniture to public basic schools across the municipality.

The donation forms part of the Government of Ghana’s nationwide effort to improve access to quality education and create a conducive environment for effective teaching and learning.

Speaking at a brief ceremony held at the Presbyterian Basic School in Ashaiman, Dr. Norgbey commended the government for fulfilling its commitment to the education sector. He noted that the provision of the desks would help eliminate the shift system in several schools within the municipality, a challenge that has contributed to absenteeism among pupils.

According to the MP, plans are also underway to procure furniture for teachers, adding that the initiative will become an annual support programme for the Municipal Education Directorate. He urged pupils to take good care of the furniture and use it responsibly.

Mr. Freeman Tsekpo expressed appreciation to the President and the MP for prioritising education in Ashaiman. He assured residents that the furniture would be distributed fairly among all public basic schools in the municipality.

He explained that the Presbyterian Basic School, a legacy project, had previously lacked adequate furniture for pupils despite the completion of its classroom block. The newly supplied desks, he said, would enable students to begin learning immediately in a more comfortable environment.

Mr. Tsekpo further highlighted the durability of the new furniture, which is made from a combination of wood and metal, making it stronger and more long-lasting than the wooden desks previously used in many schools. He encouraged beneficiaries to maintain the furniture properly to ensure its longevity.

The Municipal Director of Education, Ms. Gloria Kwakuyi, welcomed the intervention, describing it as a demonstration of the government's commitment to providing all essential teaching and learning resources.

She confirmed that the shift system at Presbyterian Basic School had been abolished with immediate effect following the arrival of the furniture and expressed optimism that the practice would be completely eliminated across the municipality by the end of the year.

As part of the visit, the delegation also inspected ongoing construction works on a new 12-unit classroom block in the municipality. The project, funded by the government, is expected to further expand access to quality education and improve learning outcomes for schoolchildren in Ashaiman.

The ceremony was attended by the Municipal Coordinating Director, Ms. Jemima Apedo, Assembly staff, Assembly Members, teachers, pupils, and other stakeholders in the education sector.
