Central Gonja DCE Raises Concern Over Teenage Pregnancies Among BECE Candidates

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Central Gonja, Hon. Mahama Fuseini, has raised concerns over the increasing cases of teenage pregnancy among schoolgirls in the district, describing the situation as a setback to efforts aimed at promoting girls’ education.

The DCE made the observation during a monitoring exercise of the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) across selected examination centres in the district.

According to Hon. Mahama Fuseini, three female candidates who were expected to sit for the examination had reportedly become pregnant before the start of the exams, a development he described as worrying and requiring urgent attention from parents, schools, traditional authorities and community members.

He noted that teenage pregnancy continues to affect the educational progress and future opportunities of many young girls, urging stakeholders to strengthen efforts toward child protection, mentorship and education on reproductive health.

The DCE called on parents and guardians to take a more active role in monitoring the wellbeing of their children while encouraging communities to support initiatives that keep girls in school.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Central Gonja District Assembly to working with relevant institutions to promote quality education and create an environment where every child, especially the girl child, has the opportunity to achieve their full potential.

The monitoring exercise also provided an opportunity for the DCE to interact with examination officials, teachers and candidates to assess the smooth conduct of the BECE in the district.
