With the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) approaching, the Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has distributed locally manufactured sandals to candidates in his constituency – and announced a striking set of rewards for those who excel.
The sandals, he emphasized, were not imported.
"Together with my constituency executives we have a group here in Weija-Gbawe. All these sandals were manufactured in Weija-Gbawe. They were not manufactured or produced in China."
The MP said the gesture aims to show young people that local enterprise can thrive.
"Each and every pair of stock sandals you'll see here was produced here in Weija-Gbawe by young men and women. So I need you to understand that there is nothing impossible. You can do it. You can give me the best of grades."
GH?2,000 for Eight Ones
The MP announced a direct cash incentive for top performers, funded from his office’s coffers.
"Yesterday my chairman and I agreed that anybody who gives us at least eight ones will get at least two thousand Ghana cedis to support."
Eight ones – the highest possible BECE result – will now come with a significant reward.

Free Starter Packs for Every Candidate Who Passes
Beyond the cash prize, Shaib pledged a full "back to school" package for all passing candidates:
* A trunk
* A mattress
* A pillow
* A new school bag
* A chop box
"Every person here who is passing will get a trunk free from the MP. Will get a mattress free. Will get a pillow free. Will get a new school bag free."
He added that the promise is backed by action: "We did it last year. And we are already ready to give them to you this year."
Extra Support for Girls
The package also includes free sanitary pads.
"When you are a woman or a lady, you take your pad. And we'll give you a free pad as well."
"You Can Be a Limitation Onto Yourself"
The MP closed with a direct appeal to candidates:
"It is up to you to go and pass. When you finish, come and take your trunk. Come and take your mattress. Come and take your chop box. Come and take your pillow. Come and take your school bag."
"We want you to know that we cherish you. We want you to know that we love you. The sky is not the limit. You can be a limitation onto yourself. This is the time to go and give us all the best of grades."
