The initiative, spearheaded by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Freeman Tsekpo, and the Member of Parliament for Ashaiman, Hon. Dr. Ernest Henry Norgbey, forms part of the government's broader commitment to improving access to quality education and creating a conducive environment for effective teaching and learning.

The delivery of the desks is expected to significantly reduce the shortage of classroom furniture in public schools and bring relief to hundreds of pupils who have had to endure overcrowded classrooms and shift systems.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony held at the Presbyterian Basic School, Dr. Ernest Henry Norgbey commended the government for fulfilling its promise to improve educational infrastructure and logistics across the country.

He noted that the provision of the desks would help eliminate the shift system in some schools within the municipality, a challenge that has contributed to absenteeism and affected instructional hours.

According to the MP, plans are also underway to procure furniture for teachers, adding that the intervention would become an annual support package to the Municipal Education Directorate.

He urged pupils to take proper care of the furniture to ensure that future generations also benefit from the investment.

For his part, Hon. Freeman Tsekpo expressed appreciation to the President and the Member of Parliament for prioritising the educational needs of children in Ashaiman.

He assured residents that the furniture would be distributed fairly across all public basic schools in the municipality based on their needs.

The MCE disclosed that the newly completed Presbyterian Basic School block, which had remained without furniture since its completion, would now be fully equipped to allow pupils to commence learning immediately.

He further explained that the desks, made from durable wood and metal, are designed to withstand prolonged use and urged beneficiaries to adopt a strong maintenance culture.

The Municipal Director of Education, Ms. Gloria Kwakuyi, described the intervention as a clear demonstration of the importance attached to improving every aspect of the teaching and learning process.

She confirmed that the shift system at Presbyterian Basic School had been brought to an immediate end and expressed optimism that the practice would be completely eradicated across the municipality before the end of the year.

As part of the visit, the MCE and MP also inspected the ongoing construction of a 12-unit classroom block, another government-funded project aimed at expanding access to quality education in Ashaiman.

The brief ceremony was attended by the Municipal Coordinating Director, Ms. Jemima Apedo, Assembly staff, Assembly Members, teachers, pupils and other stakeholders in the education sector.

The intervention marks another significant milestone in efforts to improve educational outcomes in Ashaiman and ensure that every child has access to a safe, comfortable and enabling learning environment.
