MAMPONG: “We Need an Urgent School” – Residents of Konkomba Community Cry for Help

Residents of the Konkomba community in the Atonsuagya electoral area of the Mampong Municipality are appealing for urgent government intervention following a lack of basic social amenities, including a school, electricity, and good roads.

The renewed call for help comes after Ghana Districts, a local news and development monitoring outlet, toured the area following the collapse of the Sataso bridge on the Mampong-Ejura highway.

According to the team’s findings, the Konkomba community is located about 30 kilometres from Atonsuagya, and another 12 kilometres from the Mpesu community. Residents say they are cut off by bad roads and several collapsed bridges, which have been made worse by recent rains.

No School, No Electricity – Children Left Behind

During their visit, Ghana Districts interviewed opinion leaders and the assembly member for the area. They discovered that 64 children between the ages of one and 14 have never attended school because there is no school in the Konkomba community.
The community also lacks electricity, and farmers are struggling to reach their farms due to flooded roads and broken bridges.

Community Leader Appeals to Government

Mr. Kwabena Sarfo, a caretaker and community leader, has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama, the Ministry of Education, the Ashanti Regional Minister, the Regional Education Directorate, and the Mampong Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Issifu Yakubu, to come to their aid.

“The current government and Hon. Issifu Yakubu are doing a good job and they listen to the people. We are crying for immediate help – especially a school, electricity, and better roads,” Mr. Sarfo said.

Mpesu Community Also Struggling

Ghana Districts continued their tour to the nearby Mpesu community, which faces similar challenges. Although Mpesu has a basic school (from kindergarten to primary level), residents say teacher attendance is poor due to the lack of roads, electricity, and communication networks.

Mr. Paul, a committee member of the Atonsuagya electoral area who lives in Mpesu, said the community urgently needs teacher bungalows to retain staff.

“Because of the poor roads and no electricity, teachers are not coming to school. When it rains, the situation is terrible. Many teachers have transferred away,” said Hon. Paul Kofi, a committee member.

Assembly Member Laments Years of Neglect

Hon. Pukinka Yenuban, Assembly Member for the Atonsuagya electoral area, expressed frustration over the lack of response from authorities.

He told Ghana Districts that the challenges facing Konkomba, Mpesu, and Atonsuagya – including poor roads, no electricity, and the need for a school at Konkomba – have become overwhelming.

He also pointed out a long-standing sanitation issue: “Even Atonsuagya community has a dumping site right in the middle of the town. It has been there for about 20 years and is causing diseases.”

Hon. Pukinka Yenuban said he has reported these issues to the Mampong Municipal Assembly repeatedly but received no help.
“With the help of Ghana Districts’ platform, I hope some of these challenges in my electoral area will finally be solved,” he added.
