The projects form part of interventions being undertaken by the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to stabilise electricity supply in the region, particularly in Kumasi, as power demand continues to rise in the Garden City.
The Minister was accompanied by the Ashanti Regional Minister, the Managing Director of ECG, the Chief Executive Officer of GRIDCo, journalists, and other dignitaries.
As part of the tour, Dr Jinapor and his entourage visited the Aska and CENIT plants at Anwomaso, the Boadi-Kaase-Ridge Bulk Supply Point (BSP) sub-transmission lines, the GRIDCo substation in Kumasi, and the Ridge BSP.
The team observed that the Aska Plant, which currently generates about 130 megawatts (MW) of power, is undergoing the second phase of a system upgrade.
They also inspected the CENIT Plant, a new power generation facility currently under construction and expected to produce 110MW of power upon completion to enhance electricity supply in the region. The project, which falls under the Independent Power Producers (IPPs) initiative, is expected to be completed by May or June 2026.
The delegation further noted that ECG had procured and installed a new 30/39 MegaVolt-Ampere (MVA) transformer at the Ridge Substation in Kumasi to replace the old 20/26 MVA transformer. The upgrade is intended to increase the substation’s load capacity to meet the growing demand for reliable electricity in the city.
As part of efforts to improve power distribution in the region, the old transformer from the Ridge Substation was relocated to Offinso for installation to serve communities within that enclave.
Dr Jinapor stated that the government remained committed to ensuring stable, safe, and reliable power supply across the country, especially in Kumasi, which he described as the heartbeat of economic activities in the Ashanti Region.
To complement the major system upgrades in the region, ECG is currently installing about 300 transformers in various communities. According to the Minister, an additional 400 transformers will be installed under the second phase of the transformer installation project in the region.
He disclosed that GRIDCo would commence a major upgrade of its transmission lines in July to improve the reliability of the national power transmission system.
The Minister also revealed that ECG was undertaking projects to improve electricity supply in the Volta Region. He explained that a transmission line would be constructed from Asiekpe to Ho to provide the area with a dedicated power feeder and strengthen electricity supply along the Eastern Corridor.
In addition, about 18 transformers are expected to be installed in communities within the Mpohor area of the Western Region by next week to improve power supply in that part of the country.
Dr Jinapor appealed to the public to exercise patience as the energy sector undertakes major system upgrades to stabilise electricity supply nationwide.
“Occasionally, we may have to shut down some plants or equipment to enable engineers and technical staff to carry out the necessary works,” he explained.
He expressed optimism that by the end of the third quarter of 2026, the country would experience a more stable and resilient power supply system.
Dr Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister, commended the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition for its commitment and dedication towards improving electricity supply in the region.
