The Environmental Health Unit remains the lead agency responsible for sanitation management, with Zoomlion Ghana Limited contracted to handle key services such as solid waste collection and disinfestation. However, the Unit now plays a critical oversight role—monitoring, supervising, and reporting on sanitation operations before payments are made.

Despite these arrangements, challenges persist. Under the contract, Zoomlion was expected to provide nine skip containers, but as of September 2025, only six had been supplied. The situation has been worsened by irregular lifting of waste, leaving containers overflowing with refuse and posing serious health risks to surrounding communities.

Residents have raised concerns about the growing heaps of waste, warning that the situation could lead to disease outbreaks if not urgently addressed.

Beyond the skip containers, some communities rely on designated waste collection sites managed jointly by residents and the District Assembly. The district also has 16 public toilet facilities serving major communities.

Stakeholders are calling for stricter enforcement of sanitation contracts, improved waste collection schedules, and increased investment in sanitation infrastructure to safeguard public health.

The Assembly is expected to intensify monitoring and collaborate closely with service providers to restore efficiency and ensure a cleaner, healthier environment across the district.
