The exercise, held on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, followed extensive stakeholder consultations and technical assessments to identify a suitable location for the landmark project.

The event brought together Assembly Members, traditional authorities, residents, and officials of the Assembly, all of whom welcomed the initiative as a major step toward economic transformation within the municipality.

Addressing participants, the Municipal Chief Executive for Yilo Krobo, Francis Addo Akumatey, explained that the site selection was based strictly on technical requirements outlined by the Ministry, including land size, accessibility, and proximity to major business centres.

According to the consulting firm, FeDems Limited, the proposed ultra-modern market will include cold stores, modern sanitation facilities, childcare centres, police and fire posts, a mini clinic, pharmacy, and a women’s bank to support female entrepreneurs and traders.

The project forms part of the Government’s broader 24-hour economy initiative aimed at boosting local economic development, enhancing commerce, and creating employment opportunities across Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies nationwide.

Traditional authorities and residents expressed excitement over the project, describing it as a timely intervention that will stimulate economic activities and improve livelihoods within the municipality.

Stakeholders believe the market will significantly enhance trading activities, support local businesses, and position Somanya as a key commercial hub in the Eastern Region
