Speaking at Afrancho to mark this year’s World Day Against Child Labour, Mr. Osei Poku described child labour as one of the most pressing child rights challenges in the district and the nation at large.
“Child labour continues to deprive many children of their rights to education, protection, development, and a safe childhood,” he said.
The event was held under the theme: “Red Card to Child Labour: Fair Play for Children, Decent Work for Adults.”
Thousands affected in the district
Mr. Osei Poku noted that thousands of children in Offinso North are involved in child labour, often under hazardous conditions in sectors such as agriculture, domestic service, and informal employment.
“Child labour remains one of the most pressing developmental challenges confronting our district,” he stressed.
While acknowledging poverty as a root cause, he emphasised that Ghana already has the necessary laws, policies, and programmes to address the issue. What is lacking, he implied, is more decisive action and coordination.
A violation of children’s rights
The Social Welfare Officer further stated that child labour is not just a social and economic problem but a serious violation of children’s rights as guaranteed under Ghanaian and international laws.
He stressed that eliminating child labour requires addressing its root causes, including poverty, inequality, inadequate social protection, and barriers to quality education.
Every child counts
According to Mr. Osei Poku, every child removed from labour and returned to school represents a restored childhood and a brighter future. He called on all stakeholders to renew their commitment to ending all forms of child labour in the district.
