Sekondi-Takoradi’s Rich Cultural Heritage Calls for Renewed Communal Spirit
The Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) stands tall as one of Ghana’s most culturally vibrant metropolitan areas, shaped by three powerful traditional authorities—Sekondi, Essikadu, and Takoradi.

Each of these paramountcies plays a crucial role in preserving the identity, customs, and governance systems that define the Western Region’s only twin-city metropolis. At the heart of Essikadu’s traditional leadership is Nana Kobina Nketsiah V, the revered paramount chief whose influence extends across the area. Sekondi, on the other hand, is currently under the stewardship of Nana Whinney, who has served as caretaker paramount chief since 2013.
The Takoradi traditional area is led by Osahene Katekyi Busumakura III, a respected figure known for championing development and cultural preservation. These traditional councils, made up of various sub-chiefs, meet regularly to deliberate on matters affecting their communities—from land administration to cultural festivals and development priorities. Their role remains central to maintaining social cohesion and guiding the metropolis through rapid urbanization.
Yet, despite this strong traditional foundation, communal spirit in the urban zones remains worryingly low. With urban areas such as Takoradi, Sekondi, Tanokrom, and Kwesimintsim accounting for 96.4% of the metropolis’s population, the fast-paced lifestyle and modern pressures have weakened the once-strong sense of togetherness.
In contrast, the peri-urban communities—Whindo, Assakae, Mpatado, Kansaworado, and Enoe—continue to uphold vibrant communal values. Here, residents actively participate in community clean-ups, local decision-making, and traditional events, demonstrating the power of unity in driving development.
Local leaders and development planners are calling for a renewed push to revive communalism across the metropolis, emphasizing that collective effort is essential for sustaining growth, improving sanitation, and strengthening cultural identity. As Sekondi-Takoradi continues to expand, the spirit of togetherness may well be the key to unlocking its full development potential.
