The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr. George Kpakpo Allotey, said the intervention was aimed at improving the livelihoods of beneficiaries by providing financial assistance, educational support, medical aid and tools to establish or expand small businesses.
He explained that the initiative formed part of the government's commitment to reducing poverty, promoting social inclusion and ensuring that persons with disabilities had equal opportunities to participate in socioeconomic activities.
According to him, the Assembly had adopted a needs-based approach to the distribution of the three per cent allocation from the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF), with support categorised into four main areas.
Under the economic empowerment and income generation component, beneficiaries received items including industrial sewing machines, deep freezers, shoemaking tools, baking equipment and provisions for container-based businesses to enable them to establish or expand their livelihoods.
The educational support component provided assistance to students with disabilities in tertiary, secondary and vocational technical institutions through the payment of school fees, accommodation expenses and the provision of specialised learning materials.
For healthcare and mobility needs, the Assembly provided assistive devices such as wheelchairs, crutches, white canes and hearing aids, alongside financial assistance for specialised surgeries and ongoing medical therapies.
The fourth component involved direct financial support to highly vulnerable and elderly persons with disabilities, particularly those experiencing severe mobility challenges, to help meet their immediate feeding and upkeep needs.
Mr. Allotey said the interventions were intended to promote self-reliance, improve the living conditions of beneficiaries and reduce their economic dependence on others.
