Gomoa East Education under Pressure as Class Sizes Hit 50 Pupils per Classroom

Although the Metropolis boasts a total of 703 schools, including 585 private schools and 122 public schools, educational facilities are neither evenly nor equitably distributed across the district. The southern parts of the Metropolitan, particularly the Nyanyano and Ojobi/Akotsi Area Councils, have the highest concentration of educational facilities, while northern communities within the Dominase Area Council continue to lag behind.
The imbalance has created a situation where children in some rural communities must travel long distances to access quality education, while schools in urbanized areas continue to experience congestion.
Statistics from the district reveal that private schools dominate the educational landscape, accounting for 82.9% of all schools in Gomoa East, while public schools make up only 17.1%.
At the basic level, there are 152 private Kindergarten schools compared to only 38 public KGs. At the primary level, private schools number 154 against 39 public schools, while Junior High Schools stand at 126 private schools compared to 41 public schools.
Interestingly, despite the overwhelming number of private schools, many parents still prefer enrolling their children in public schools due to affordability and perceived quality of teaching. This preference has resulted in severe overcrowding in public classrooms.
Average class sizes in the district currently stand at about 50 pupils per class at the KG and JHS levels, far above the recommended class size of 35. At the primary level, class populations average 45 pupils instead of the expected 35.
Education authorities say the situation has created an urgent need for additional classroom blocks, especially in fast-growing communities.
The Metropolis has also identified several schools requiring renovation, most of which are located in rural communities where educational infrastructure remains weak.
Teacher population figures further reveal the scale of educational demand in the district. Gomoa East currently has a total teacher population of 1,215 made up of 1,185 trained teachers and 30 untrained teachers.
At the Junior High School level alone, there are 442 teachers, while the primary level has 396 teachers. Senior High Schools account for 248 teachers, with Kindergarten schools recording 129 teachers.
Female teachers slightly outnumber their male counterparts in the district. Out of the 1,185 trained teachers, 639 are females while 546 are males.
Education stakeholders believe that although teacher numbers appear encouraging, infrastructure deficits remain one of the biggest threats to quality education delivery in the Municipality.
Residents and parents are therefore calling for urgent investments in classroom expansion, school rehabilitation, furniture provision, and equitable distribution of educational facilities to bridge the growing gap between urban and rural communities.
For many residents, the future of Gomoa East’s development depends heavily on improving access to quality education for every child regardless of where they live.
