The initiative, the first of its kind in the district, is being undertaken in collaboration with private agro-input dealers and key stakeholders within the agricultural value chain. The exercise is expected to provide farmers with practical knowledge and technical support to enhance production and improve the quality of agricultural produce.
Launching the programme, the District Chief Executive, Hon. Raphael Uriel Nartey, reiterated government's commitment to transforming the agricultural sector and improving the livelihoods of farmers.
He noted that agriculture remains a critical pillar of the local economy and assured farmers that the District Assembly would continue to complement government efforts to support agricultural growth and food security.
Hon. Nartey encouraged farmers to actively participate in the demonstration exercise and apply the knowledge gained to their farming activities to maximize productivity and increase incomes. He also expressed appreciation to the programme's partners and input dealers for their support, assuring them of the Assembly's commitment to sustaining such interventions.
The Greater Accra Regional Director of Agriculture, Mrs. Rogatta Antwi-Baadu, described the district as one of the most important agricultural hubs in the region due to its significant rice production and the presence of the Dawhenya Irrigation Dam.
According to her, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture continues to roll out interventions under the Feed Ghana Programme, including the Nkukor Nkitinkiti Project and the Crop Development Project, both of which seek to improve agricultural productivity through technical training and the proper use of agricultural inputs.
She explained that the crop demonstration initiative forms part of efforts to help farmers achieve maximum yields through the correct application of agrochemicals and the adoption of improved farming practices.
The District Director of Agriculture, Mr. Prince Boateng, noted that the exercise represents a major step towards strengthening collaboration among stakeholders within the agricultural value chain.
He acknowledged the numerous challenges confronting farmers and stressed the need for stronger partnerships to leverage expertise, technology, and resources for sustainable agricultural development.
Mr. Boateng expressed gratitude to key partners, including Bon Agro Limited, East-West Seeds, Yara Ghana Limited, Seed Hub Ghana, and Green World Ghana Limited, for their significant support in cash, agrochemicals, seeds, and other resources towards the successful implementation of the programme.
He announced that the demonstrations would commence the following week across six farming communities—Dawa, Dawhenya, Ningo, Afienya, Tsopoli, and Prampram.
According to him, the practical sessions will expose farmers to innovative farming technologies and best practices that will increase productivity and improve crop quality.
In her closing remarks, the District Coordinating Director, Mrs. Vida Awuku, thanked the farmers for their participation and urged them to take full advantage of the exercise.
She encouraged participants to embrace the new techniques being introduced, particularly the proper application of agrochemicals, to ensure healthier crops and higher yields.
The crop demonstration programme is expected to strengthen agricultural extension services in the district while fostering stronger collaboration between farmers, government agencies, and private sector partners to drive sustainable agricultural growth.
