The operation is scheduled to begin on February 15, 2026.

The announcement was made at a stakeholder meeting convened by the Assembly Management with market traders, associations, and driver unions at the Bonokyempem Hall.

Key Details of the Exercise

In his address, the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Martin Adjei Mensah-Korsah, outlined the scope and necessity of the exercise. The decongestion will focus primarily on the area from Sunyani Station to Nana Addae Simon Bridge.

The operation will involve:

· The removal of traders operating on roadways and in lorry parks.

· The relocation of containers and structures that have extended beyond approved shop fronts.

· Clearing all unauthorized obstructions to create adequate space and improve accessibility within the market.

Hon. Mensah-Korsah acknowledged that the exercise would affect some traders and emphasized that the early communication was to ensure ample preparation. He urged full cooperation from all stakeholders.

New Revenue Committee & Future Market Plans

The MCE also announced the formation of a new committee, led by Mr. J. Adom, to oversee revenue mobilization. He called on all traders to comply with the committee’s regulations, particularly regarding revenue payments.

Looking to the future, Hon. Mensah-Korsah briefed attendees on the planned 24-Hour Economy Market earmarked for Wa Station. He stated the government's intention to redevelop the Techiman Market to a standard comparable to the Kejetia Market. During the redevelopment period, affected traders will be temporarily relocated to designated sites at Abourso, Orange Market, and Millennium Park.

Traditional Council and Police Support

Nana Antwi Boasiako, the Dabehene of the Techiman Traditional Council (also known as Nana Kentenhene), endorsed the Assembly’s directives. He specifically advised pragya (tricycle) drivers to adhere strictly to all operational regulations.

The Techiman Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Albert Fii Othil, addressed security concerns. He advised traders to safeguard their goods and announced that police personnel will be deployed to maintain law and order during and after the exercise.

C/Supt. Othil reiterated the two-week timeline for the operation to commence and cautioned pragya drivers against overloading, emphasizing the limit of three passengers per tricycle. He concluded by encouraging vigilance against petty crime and fraud, especially during financial transactions and phone calls in the market.

Call for Cooperation

All speakers emphasized the importance of teamwork and compliance for the successful execution of the decongestion plan, which aims to foster a safer, more orderly, and developed trading environment in the Techiman Municipality.
