Speaking on behalf of the Dome Traditional Council and residents, Okyeame Kwabena Konadu said the community is overwhelmed by a long-standing public dumping site located in the middle of the town.
He explained that the refuse site has grown beyond control over the years, creating a severe environmental and health hazard. According to him, the accumulated waste has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes, rodents and other vectors, contributing to a rise in malaria, cholera and respiratory issues among residents, especially children.
Okyeame Konadu added that the stench and smoke from intermittent burning at the site are making life unbearable for nearby households.
The traditional leaders, led by Nana Osei Akoto II, Chief of Dome, are also calling for a decent public place of convenience. Okyeame Konadu said the lack of a proper public toilet facility is exacerbating the risk of open defecation and undermining the Assembly’s efforts toward a clean and open-defecation-free municipality.
The chiefs are therefore asking the Assembly to deploy heavy machinery to evacuate the accumulated waste and completely clear the current dumping site. They also want Dome included in the Assembly’s immediate development plan for the construction of a modern, institutionalized public toilet facility, preferably with water-closet systems and sustainable management structures.
According to Okyeame Konadu, the Dome community is ready to cooperate with the Assembly, provide community monitoring and allocate the necessary land for the new facility.
School infrastructure deficits.

In a related development, the School Management Committees (SMCs) in Dome have highlighted severe deficits at the Dome M/A Primary and Basic School, including cracked and pothole-riddled classroom floors, leaking roofs, a severe lack of furniture and acute teacher shortages driven by the absence of staff accommodation.
Mr. Ali Salifu, SMC Chairman for the school, said the conditions are forcing children to sit on bare ground or crowded benches. He also noted that newly posted or reassigned teachers often refuse or struggle to accept postings to Dome because of the lack of safe housing and basic amenities such as teachers’ bungalows and electricity.
The SMC is appealing to the Ashanti Regional Minister, the Asante Mampong Municipal Assembly, the Mampong Municipal Education Directorate and other stakeholders to come to the aid of the school.
Meanwhile, the Dome Traditional Leaders have begun putting up a portable structure for a Computer and ICT lab and are calling for support to complete the Dome M/A Primary and Basic School ICT and computer laboratory. They are appealing to NGOs, individuals, the Municipal Assembly and the Education Directorate for immediate assistance.
