The Minister made the disclosure on Thursday while responding to questions in Parliament. He confirmed that the government has scheduled the implementation of the policy to begin on July 1, 2026.
“Mr. Speaker, the government has decided to implement another social intervention of free education for all persons with special needs, along with supportive assistive devices,” Mr. Iddrisu stated.
To fund this initiative, the Minister revealed that the 2026 GETFund formula has been adjusted to include a dedicated allocation of 100 million Ghana cedis.
Beyond the financial commitment, Mr. Iddrisu also outlined plans for major infrastructure development to support special education across the country. He noted that funding has been secured to construct two specialized educational facilities, with locations already identified in the Kintampo District and Ho in the Volta Region.
The announcement comes alongside commitments to rehabilitate existing institutions. The Minister specifically referenced the Akropong school for the deaf, which he recently visited during their anniversary celebration. “I was in Akropong for their anniversary celebration and will follow up to deal with it,” he assured the House, promising to address the needs of the facility.
The policy represents a major step forward in Ghana’s efforts to ensure equitable access to education for vulnerable populations.
