Obuasi East Assembly Supports 62 PWDs with Business Equipment, Trade Items and Financial Assistance

The Obuasi East Municipal Assembly, through its Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, has supported 62 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) with income-generating equipment, trade inventory and financial assistance to promote economic independence and improve their livelihoods

The presentation, held at the premises of the Municipal Assembly, brought together local government officials, community leaders and members of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organizations (GFD).

The intervention forms part of efforts to promote socio-economic inclusion and help PWDs transition from economic dependency to self-reliance by providing them with practical resources to establish or strengthen their livelihoods.

Addressing the gathering, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. William Kofi Adzowu, explained that the initiative was funded through the mandatory 5 percent allocation of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) designated for Persons with Disabilities.

He stressed that the intervention should not be viewed merely as charity but as a strategic investment in the abilities and potential of persons with disabilities.

Hon. Adzowu said the provision of tools and resources would enable beneficiaries to work, support their families and contribute meaningfully to economic activity within the municipality.

The items were selected based on the individual needs, skills and preferred trades of the beneficiaries following a needs assessment conducted by the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development.

The support package included a wide range of industrial equipment and vocational tools, such as deep freezers, refrigerators, industrial sewing machines, knitting machines, hairdryers with washing basins, an industrial oven, an aluminium miter saw, a portable welding machine, a cocoa spraying machine, a fufu pounding machine and a water storage tank.

Beneficiaries also received trade inventory and retail stocks, including bales of used clothing, bags of charcoal, bags of onions, crates of eggs, assorted provisions and food items such as maize, millet, beans, rice and cooking oil.

The Assembly further provided educational and medical assistance, including a laptop computer, financial support for fees to attend special schools and direct financial assistance for beneficiaries requiring surgical procedures.

According to Hon. Adzowu, economically empowering PWDs has benefits beyond individual livelihoods, including helping to reduce dependence and street begging while restoring dignity and confidence among persons who may otherwise face economic exclusion.

He therefore urged the beneficiaries to take good care of the items and use them productively to improve their living conditions.

The MCE also cautioned family members who received items on behalf of relatives with severe disabilities to ensure that the resources were used solely for the benefit and wellbeing of the intended beneficiaries.

He stressed that the impact of the intervention should be reflected in the daily lives of the PWDs whose needs informed the support.

Expressing gratitude on behalf of the beneficiaries, the Obuasi East Chairman of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organizations, Mr Kwame Ankrah, commended the Municipal Assembly and the MCE for their continued commitment to improving the welfare and economic prospects of PWDs in the municipality.

The intervention forms part of the Assembly’s broader efforts to promote inclusive development and ensure that persons with disabilities have access to opportunities and resources that can enable them to become economically active and self-reliant.
