Akim Oda MP calls for use of seized galamsey excavators to dredge choked drains

Member of Parliament for Akim Oda, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, has appealed to the government to consider using excavators seized from illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, sites to dredge choked drains and waterways across the country rather than destroying the machines.

The MP argued that putting the seized equipment to productive use could help address some of the country’s pressing infrastructure challenges, particularly poor drainage systems and perennial flooding in communities.

According to him, the excavators could be deployed to desilt and deepen drains, waterways and other flood-prone areas, while also supporting road and other infrastructure projects.

Mr. Acquah made the appeal when he inspected the completion of dredging works in Akim Oda, undertaken to improve the flow of stormwater and reduce the risk of flooding during heavy downpours.

He said the government financed the dredging of approximately 500 metres of the drainage channel, while an additional 350 metres was dredged through funding from his office, bringing the total length of the completed dredging works to about 850 metres.

The MP described Akim Oda as a low-lying area, making several parts of the municipality particularly vulnerable to flooding whenever there is heavy rainfall.

He therefore urged the government and relevant authorities to prioritize communities without adequate drainage infrastructure and undertake projects that will improve water flow and protect residents and properties from flooding.

Mr. Acquah said the use of seized excavators for such public works would ensure that equipment confiscated in the fight against illegal mining could be converted into a resource for national development.
