President John Dramani Mahama announced the latest figures during his 2026 State of the Nation Address (SONA), revealing tangible progress under the Rural Electrification Programme. According to the President, 200 out of 400 targeted communities have been successfully connected to the national grid, with an additional 100 communities at various stages of completion.
"We are committed to ensuring that every Ghanaian has access to reliable, affordable electricity," President Mahama stated, reaffirming his administration's dedication to bridging the energy access gap.
However, the positive development is tempered by persistent operational challenges within the distribution sector. The President expressed concern over the high levels of power losses experienced by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). Reports indicate that the utility is currently losing approximately 25 percent of generated power—a figure that represents a significant financial drain on the state.
In a bid to address these inefficiencies and secure the gains made in power generation, the government is pivoting toward private-sector participation. President Mahama identified private involvement, particularly in the critical areas of billing and collections, as the most effective strategy to substantially reduce the losses.
"To address this phenomenon and anchor the gains we have made, adopting private-sector involvement, particularly in billing and collections, is the most effective way to significantly reduce these losses," he told Parliament.
The President revealed that Cabinet has already granted approval for the Multiple Lease Method for concessions in the distribution utilities. He confirmed that work is currently ongoing to implement this critical reform, signaling a major shift in the management of the country’s power distribution network aimed at improving financial sustainability and service delivery.
