Speaking in an interview, Bedzra said the numerous development projects scattered across the region are proof that President John Dramani Mahama and the government are intentionally working to uplift the area.

“I must be thankful to H.E. John Dramani Mahama for bringing his vision to the fore, to the extent that the Volta Region has started seeing the fruit of our labour for voting for the National Democratic Congress,” he said.

Bedzra noted that in the last election, the Volta Region recorded over 90% of votes for the NDC. “Whatever comes to the Volta Region, I’m not in any doubt that he is intentionally projecting and developing the region,” he added.

He acknowledged that in the past, there was a perception the region did not get its fair share of the national cake, leading some to vote against the NDC. “But currently, we are seeing the fruit of our own labour of voting,” he said.

Ongoing projects: Roads, university campus, and harbour

Bedzra recently led fellow Volta MPs on a tour of ongoing projects, particularly road construction. Their first stop was the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) Public Health campus in Hohoe, which had been abandoned.

“I can state categorically that the contractor has remobilised back to site, and he has assured me that by October of this year to early November, the project would be handed over,” Bedzra said.

He explained that the lecture facility was about 50% complete when the NDC left office previously, with payments stalled. “But when we came, we reviewed that rate and gave approval for the contractor to move to site. As we speak today, it’s almost 70% complete.”

The delegation also inspected several “Big Push” projects. “Happily, I must say that the Volta Region has been a major beneficiary – almost all our major roads are seeing appreciable work being done on them,” Bedzra added, noting that major roads in his own Ho West constituency are also under construction.

Education and Keta Harbour progress

On educational infrastructure, Bedzra said the Volta Region tops the country, with over 400 projects currently underway across all levels – from basic school to university.

Regarding the Keta Harbour project, he indicated that the eight-storey administration block is nearing completion. “The next leg will be to start the harbour itself, where the ships will dock.”

“Largely, the Volta Region has seen appreciable development. We are not saying we are out of the woods yet – we are still demanding more – but I believe the good people of the Volta Region have seen that their efforts of queuing and voting have not been in vain,” Bedzra concluded.
