The committee, which operates under the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), will work with emergency and allied agencies to coordinate readiness plans and guide the municipality’s response to weather-related risks in the coming months.

The committee brings together representatives from the District Police Command, the Fire Service, the Ambulance Service, the Information Services Department, the Social Development Department, the Environmental Health Department, the Development Planning Unit, and the Office of the Member of Parliament.

Mr. Kumordzi said the activation of the committee was timely, noting that heavy rains in the area were often accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms capable of tearing off roofs and displacing families.

Akuapem North, he added, “is frequently affected by various accidents and disasters,” making it necessary for the municipality to plan ahead rather than react after incidents occur.

He encouraged members to fully commit to their duties and make themselves available for meetings, stressing that effective coordination was essential for protecting lives and property.

“Serving the community is akin to serving God,” he told them, urging dedication and professionalism.

The Municipal Director of NADMO, Ms. Joyce Bekoe, reminded members that their role carried serious responsibility.

She said the nature and frequency of disasters recorded in the municipality demanded more than NADMO’s internal capacity, highlighting the need for collaboration with local organisations and community volunteers to effectively address these challenges.

“NADMO cannot tackle these challenges alone,” she said, adding that the committee’s expertise would be crucial in shaping response measures and readiness plans.

She also urged members to make themselves available for meetings, emphasising that disaster preparedness required consistency and teamwork rather than isolated interventions.

In the presence of the Eastern Regional NADMO Director and his team, the MCE led members of the committee to take the Oath of Secrecy and the Oath of Allegiance, formally binding them to the responsibilities attached to their roles.
