Poor Road Conditions Continue to Affect Transportation in Upper Denkyira West District
Date Created : 6/1/2026 : Story Author : Mary Ayertey/Ghanadistricts.com
The district currently has about 40 feeder roads with a total length of approximately 360 kilometres. However, most of these roads are in deplorable conditions and often become unmotorable during the rainy season, making transportation difficult for residents.
The poor state of the feeder roads continues to hamper the smooth movement of goods and people, particularly from farming communities in the hinterlands to major urban centres and markets.
The main highway linking Dunkwa-on-Offin to Sefwi Bekwai passes through the district, beginning from Ayanfuri in the south through Diaso in the north before connecting to Sefwi Bekwai in the Western North Region. Another important road stretch also connects Diaso to Sefwi Asawinso.
As part of efforts to improve road infrastructure, the 50-kilometre road stretch from Ayanfuri through Diaso to Asawinso has been asphalted. In addition, the Ayanfuri–Wassa–Nkonya road, covering about five kilometres, has also received asphalt overlay to improve accessibility and transportation within the area.
Several other feeder roads across the district are currently undergoing major upgrading works aimed at improving connectivity and supporting economic activities, especially agriculture and trade.
Meanwhile, the district’s railway transport system, which previously played a significant role in the transportation of freight and passengers, particularly bauxite, has collapsed over the years.
Residents believe that revamping the railway sector would help reduce pressure on the highways, lower transportation costs, and improve the movement of goods and services across the district and beyond.
The District Assembly continues to advocate for increased investment in road and transport infrastructure to enhance mobility, boost local economic development, and improve access to social services for residents.
