The commendation follows an exercise by the municipal assembly to clear hawkers and traders operating along pedestrian walkways and roadsides, which had increasingly become occupied by commercial activities, including the sale and preparation of food.

Before the intervention, several streets within the central business district were reportedly congested, as hawkers occupied pedestrian walkways and portions of the roads, creating difficulties for motorists and pedestrians.

The situation not only affected the free movement of people and vehicles but also raised concerns about sanitation, public safety and the general appearance of the regional capital.

However, following the assembly's intervention, the affected streets and walkways have been cleared, allowing pedestrians and motorists to use the spaces more conveniently while improving the appearance of the business district.

Residents have welcomed the exercise, describing the restoration of order as an important step towards making Municipality a cleaner, more organised and attractive regional capital.

The development has also brought renewed attention to the need for effective urban management and the enforcement of regulations governing the use of public spaces.

While commending the MCE and the city guards for the intervention, the sustainability of the exercise remains crucial. A comprehensive and consistent monitoring strategy, together with the provision of appropriate trading spaces, would be necessary to prevent hawkers from returning to the cleared areas.

The assembly is therefore encouraged to sustain the enforcement exercise and engage traders and other relevant stakeholders to ensure that the gains made are maintained.

Maintaining discipline in the central business area will be essential to promoting a cleaner environment, improving pedestrian safety and enhancing the overall outlook of municipality
