Speaking with GhanaDistricts TV, the Municipal Chief Executive explained that the initiative is being funded through the Assembly's Internally Generated Fund (IGF) as part of efforts to channel locally mobilised resources into productive ventures that will stimulate economic growth and improve livelihoods.

She noted that the project is expected to position the municipality as an emerging centre for aquaculture development while providing opportunities for local farmers, young people and entrepreneurs to venture into fish farming as a sustainable source of income.

The first phase of the project will commence with 10,000 fingerlings in three fully constructed fish ponds. Plans are also underway to expand the facility to five ponds, with the capacity to accommodate 15,000 fingerlings in the coming weeks.

According to the project details, the first harvest is expected within four to six months, a development that is anticipated to contribute to the local supply of fish and support efforts to improve food security.

Hon. Akabila further indicated that the initiative aligns with the government's broader Feed Ghana Initiative, which seeks to modernise agriculture, strengthen domestic food production and empower communities through sustainable agricultural practices.

Beyond increasing fish production, the project is expected to create opportunities across the aquaculture value chain, including fish processing, marketing, distribution and other related businesses.

The Assembly has therefore encouraged local farmers, the youth and prospective entrepreneurs to explore fish farming as a viable economic activity, noting its potential to generate income, create jobs and contribute to the municipality's development.

The project demonstrates the Assembly's commitment to using internally generated resources to support practical economic interventions while promoting sustainable agriculture and community empowerment.
