The operation, which began along the Awudome Cemetery stretch and continued to the Rev. Thomas Clegg Methodist School, is expected to extend to other areas, including the Central Business District (CBD), Korle-Bu, and surrounding neighbourhoods.

According to the Head of Public Affairs at the AMA, Mr. Gilbert Nii Ankrah, the exercise forms part of ongoing efforts by the Assembly to maintain a clean, safe, and environmentally sustainable city.

He explained that the initiative follows a directive from the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, who during one of his routine inspection tours, expressed concern about overgrown trees obstructing streetlights, traffic signals, and pedestrian pathways.

Mr. Ankrah noted that the pruning is not only intended to enhance visibility and reduce accidents caused by falling branches but also to protect power lines and public infrastructure, particularly during heavy rains and storms.

He added that the AMA, through its NADMO unit, had deployed teams to undertake the exercise systematically, with due regard for safety and minimal disruption to traffic.

He disclosed that the Assembly had mapped out a long-term strategy to plant more trees across the metropolis as part of its climate mitigation and heat-resilience measures, stressing that maintaining and expanding Accra’s green cover remained central to the city’s environmental sustainability agenda.

Mr. Ankrah appealed to residents and business owners to cooperate with field officers during the exercise and reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to ensuring that Accra remains clean, green, and safe for all.
