This initiative is aimed at tackling the rising incidence of open defecation in the area.

Mr. Park-Davies Maggigbe revealed this, during the World Toilet Day celebration in Jasikan; the assembly has already gazetted its sanitation by-laws, which will soon take effect. This will empower authorities to prosecute sanitation offenders and ensure compliance with the law.

He added that the assembly will intensify education campaigns to increase sanitation coverage beyond the initial targeted communities for household latrine enforcement.

According to him, maintaining a cleaner and healthier environment aligns with President John Mahama’s initiatives, stressing that preventing diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and other environmental health issues requires strict adherence to sanitation practices.

The MCE encouraged residents to take personal hygiene seriously as the assembly continues its awareness campaigns on environmental health.

Meanwhile, the Municipal Environmental Health Officer (MEHO), Diana Affordofe, advised the public—especially residents in the Buem-Jasikan area—to take advantage of the grace period to construct and use household latrines.

“Enforcement and prosecutions will start soon,” she cautioned.

She further noted that the department, working closely with the assembly, will strengthen efforts to improve waste management and disposal practices to protect water sources and other natural resources.

As part of the celebration, pupils performed a drama to raise awareness about the need for a clean environment.
