Akatsi North Steps Up: District Strengthens Health Delivery with Community-Focused Care

Akatsi North District is rewriting the story of rural health delivery as it intensifies efforts to bring quality healthcare closer to every household. With a dynamic, community-centered system and a growing network of health facilities, the district is positioning itself as a model for effective primary healthcare in Ghana.

To ensure accessible and efficient service delivery, Akatsi North has been strategically divided into five Sub-Districts, each designed to provide timely and tailored healthcare to residents. At the heart of this system is a three-tier service delivery structure, making health services not just available but truly community-driven.

At the first level, Community Health Officers operate across 10 Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds, serving as the frontline of care. These centres provide essential health promotion, disease prevention, and treatment for minor ailments—bringing vital services right to the doorsteps of community members.

The second tier is powered by two well-equipped Health Centers, providing more advanced primary care and supporting outreach activities across the district. The third and highest level of care is delivered through the district’s referral hospital, which handles more complex cases and ensures seamless continuity of care for patients in need of specialized attention.

Akatsi North’s health system goes beyond static facility-based care. Through extended outreach services, health workers, community volunteers, and Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) reach deep into communities to deliver immunizations, home visits, maternal care, child welfare services, and mop-up activities designed to close service gaps and save lives.

These efforts reflect the district’s strong commitment to Primary Health Care, ensuring that even the most remote communities are not left behind. From health promotion to disease surveillance and door-to-door services, Akatsi North is demonstrating that proactive, people-focused healthcare is possible and effective.

Overseeing this robust system is the District Health Directorate, which manages a total of 12 health facilities, two health centers and ten CHPS compounds working together to deliver a unified, accessible, and dependable health service to the people.

With its strengthened structure, dedicated workforce, and unwavering focus on community wellbeing, Akatsi North is proving that quality healthcare is not a privilege but a right one that the district is committed to delivering to every resident.
