The exercise took off at about 7o'clock in the morning and ended at 12 noon with volunteers from various sectors, including Assembly Members, Assembly Staff, local residents, Environmental groups and some NDC faithful participating in the event, making it a huge success. It covered desilting of heavily choked drains and weeding of overgrown grass on pavements with shops along the stretch remaining closed while the exercise lasted.
Mrs. Naboo interacting with the media stated the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC) in collaboration with the Manhyia Palace directed that the exercise be carried out in preparation for the Ashanti Fest aimed at engaging the local communities in efforts to maintain a clean and healthy environment during and after the festival.
Additionally, it is in line with the government's policy to restore the Sanitation Day to create public interest in keeping a healthy environment.
On the sustainability of the exercise, the Director disclosed the Ministry of Sanitation and Parliamentary Select Committee on Waste Management and Sanitation were expected to place before the Parliament for its approval the bill for the implementation of the sanitation exercise nationwide.
According to her, such events would be expanded to reach all sectors of the society and would not be restricted to only the Sanitation workers.
She said the Environmental Department of the Assembly would implement measures to carry out the exercise on a rotational basis.
Mrs. Naboo explained further that sanitation should be the collective efforts of the citizens. She urged residents to make cleanliness their hallmark and avoid depending on the government for their social services.
