They further allege the government is frustrating a key anti-LGBTQ+ bill.
At a press conference, Vincent Ekow Assafuah condemned the integration of topics like sexual orientation and gender identity in the Physical Education and Health Elective Teacher Manual. The materials, approved by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), were denounced as "absurd, ideologically driven."
The opposition highlighted a stark contradiction, noting leading NDC figures had previously framed the anti-LGBTQ+ Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill as an urgent moral imperative. "Today, the NDC controls the Executive and commands the Majority in Parliament. Yet the urgency previously demanded has vanished," the statement declared.
The Minority provided a detailed account of the bill's recent procedural blockage, alleging it was removed from Parliament's Order Paper within 24 hours of its reintroduction "at the instance of the Majority Leader." They dismissed the Majority Leader's explanation for the removal as "unacceptable within parliamentary practice."
The statement also implicated the NDC in the issue's history, noting Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) was first introduced under a previous NDC administration. It accused the government of repeating a "pattern of political inconsistency" through its current silence.
Moving beyond criticism, the Minority issued a four-point ultimatum. Their demands include the immediate withdrawal of the materials, a transparent review process, and the dismissal of NaCCA's Director-General and Board Chairperson for a "failure of oversight."
Finally, they demanded a full parliamentary inquiry into the development and approval of the manuals. The ultimatum frames the controversy as a fundamental test of "consistency, accountability, and legislative integrity" for the government.
